The rain greatly blessed the garden.  The corn is gorgeous and we will be putting up corn Saturday.  We have already picked about 10 gallons of green beans and have some already in the freezer.  The cherry tomatoes and really good and keep on producing, we’re just waiting for the big tomatoes to ripen.  I just love going into the tomato patch and smelling the basil, tomatoes and near-by mint.

I checked on the watermelon and pumpkins:  23 watermelons and 14 pumpkins!  Wow – this is going to be fun!

Squash is an almost every day harvest and so are the cucumbers.  Spaghetti squash and patty pan squash are becoming plentiful and the black-eyed peas keep growing.  Banana peppers, jalapeno peppers and bell peppers pretty much round out the garden.  Okra was planted late and is just starting to bloom, onions are maturing, and potatoes are secretly getting bigger (new red potatoes and green beans with onions….woo hoo they are good!).

My only frustration is the weeds!  They are coming up EVERYWHERE and if it keeps raining will be monsters by the time I can get them plowed under!  The ones growing in the rows are another matter entirely.

With the rain, sun and heat the garden is really starting to produce.  Here is a sample of what I picked this evening:

I’m amazed at the stamina of plants.  Standing in the full sun all day (even when it was 112) and still looking fresh and green.  I know having good moisture is a plus but we are making it.

So much of my time is taken with hoeing weeds, watering, cutting lettuce, pulling radishes and beets and turnips and getting the rest of the garden planted.  All the corn (sweet and pop) are in and so are the pumpkins, watermelons, squash (yellow, zucchini, spaghetti, patty pan), tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, green beans, peppers, eggplant, black-eyed peas….whew…it’s been a busy spring!

Green beans are about to bloom, potatoes are blooming, tomatoes are starting to set and so are the cucumbers.  It won’t be long now before the garden is in full bloom and our baskets will be overflowing.

I’m tired of hoeing weeds, hoping for rain (which will cause a plethora of weeds) and enduring the heat.  It has been over 100 degrees every day for over a week and I recorded 112 last Saturday!  It looks like it is going to moderate this next week.

Nature's Candy!

Oh man!  There’s nothing better than FRESH veggies.  The radishes needed to be thinned and WOW what a haul! (and this isn’t all I could have pulled)

We eat them like candy…so much better than what you buy in the store!

Now, Linda told me we weren’t going to sell any radishes (they’re her absolute favorites).  So, I might just be convinced to GIVE you a few.  The beauty is…it only takes about 30 days grow more!

The garden is growing, I’m planning on putting in most of the rest of the stuff this weekend, and the hoe and hose are my best friends again!  I’m looking forward to having you come get your veggies from me this summer.  Keep watching and I’ll keep you updated.

The potatoes are poking their heads out of the ground, the onions are doing well and the sugar snap peas are doing great.  It looks like there is a good stand of carrots and the beets are just now coming up good.  The asparagus is all up and the fern-like heads are growing and showing signs of blooming.   I replanted most of the lettuce, turnips, spinach and the giant radishes.

Today, put in some brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage (white and red).  Onward we go and will plant more stuff toward the end of April.

These two signs will be installed on the gates to the garden.  When the gates are open and the signs visible…WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!  Now I just need to get them on the gates.

The orchard is still small since this is only the second year, but the early blooms on the peach trees look nice.  The plum, apple and almond trees are all blooming – giving the bees an early spring treat!
