La Huerta Produce is operated by Mark and Linda Schinnerer.
We are a large garden in the la Huerta area of North Carlsbad, NM (la huerta means the orchard or kitchen garden in spanish). We grow vegetables, fruit (apples, plums, apricots, peaches and cherries) and honey bees.
I grew up on a farm in Western Kansas, Linda grew up on a farm in Southwest Nebraska. I have always enjoyed gardening and now that I have over 5,000 square feet of garden plus a 16 tree fruit orchard I have a second full-time job! Like they say: “You can take the boy out of the farm but you can’t take the farm out of the boy!”
I had a wonderful garden in 2009, and I have decided to grow an even bigger one this year. I’ll open the gate on Saturday mornings and invite friends and neighbors to come pick your own (I’ll do it if you want).
This is the second year with the bee hives and I hope to harvest a good crop of honey this year.
Check back each week to see what is ready for harvest and hours the gate will be open. If your in the neighborhood – come on by!
Growing Practices
We operate our vegetable garden as “organic in practice.” We are not ‘organic certified’ but follow the same practices and choose to not use pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Pesticides are harmful to the bees and we need them to pollinate the vegetables and fruit trees, as well as many flowers in the neighborhood. To improve the soil, we add organic material and compost.
